Inverurie was the name of both a town and a parish in Garioch district, Aberdeenshire, with the town situated at the confluence of the rivers Ury and Don. It therefore is part of the history of the northeast of Scotland. This is one of the most extended and comprehensive of local histories, and it takes as its subject the families, events, and peoples who were part of this region of Scotland from early Celtic times through the Danish invasions to the evolution of the Scottish monarchy, feudalism, the Reformation and religious changes, to the troubles of the 17th century, the Jacobites and on into the 18th and 19th centuries. Numerous greater and lesser families are discussed, including: Keith, Grant, Forbes, Johnston, Fraser, Leslie, Elphinstone, Abercromby, Gordon, Campbell, Leith, Chalmers, Smith, Lumsden, Burnett, Erskine, Blair, Seton, Stewart, Reid, Anderson, Duguid, Urquhart, Ramsay, and Ferguson. Douglas, Hume/Home, Kers, Maxwell, and Scott also figure prominently in this history. There are in addition literally hundreds of families and individuals included in this enormous and thorough study of a region over almost two thousand years.
