This work deals with the shires of Forfar and Kincardine in the northeast of Scotland, between the Tay and Dee Rivers. It is a work, however, which concentrates its attention upon the history of the region, particularly in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, when King Edward I of England was seeking to subjugate Scotland and to make its kings his subordinates. It provides an extensive survey of the castles and towns visited or subjected by Edward I in 1296, including Forfar, Kinnaird, Montrose, Kincardine, Brechin, and Dundee. It then turns to the great families who swore fealty to Edward in 1291-2 and again in 1296. Among the many families presented here are: Dundee, Glaister, Haldane, Lindsay, Lundin, Ogilvie, Ochterloney, and Ramsay. It concludes with a survey of the great abbeys of Cupar, Arbroath, and the priory of Rostinoth. It also includes material on the Knights Templar of the era and on the clergy in general.
