Bain/Bayne

This name appears in towns such as Perth, Ayr, Aberdeen, and St. Andrews from at least the 14th century. It may be from Baines in Normandy, or be a descriptive name for "fair." Families of the name, often unrelated, were allied to Clan Chattan, Clan Gregor, Mackay, MacNab, and MacBean, which as MacBain or MacBean, simply means "son of Bain."
